As infrastructure development accelerates across West Africa, Beijing Sinovo International Trading Co., Ltd. has confirmed a new export agreement for its SQY350 Crawler-Mounted Water Well Drilling Rig. The deal, finalized on a CIF Lagos Seaport basis, highlights the growing reliance on Chinese engineering equipment to meet Africa’s challenging water access demands.
Engineered for Nigerian Geology
The SQY350 is not a one-size-fits-all machine. According to the manufacturer’s technical brief, this model is specifically designed for the rugged, rocky formations that dominate much of the Nigerian landscape. Unlike lighter rigs that struggle with hard rock, the SQY350 employs a dual-approach drilling methodology. It utilizes large-torque hydraulic rotary motors for standard drilling, but can seamlessly switch to high-speed DTH (Down-The-Hole) hammer drilling when encountering hard rock or unstable gravel layers—a common geological hurdle in the country’s river valleys and basement complexes.
That adaptability carries over to how the rig is set up on site. The hydraulic outriggers are a practical touch: on uneven ground—which is more the rule than the exception in this part of Nigeria—they let the crew level the rig quickly and get straight to work. The 6.6-meter mast further cuts down on idle time by allowing longer rod sections to be handled in a single pass, a detail that matters when every hour of daylight counts.

What sets the SQY350 apart in the competitive African market is its ability to hold up in unstable formations. In gravel layers, operators can deploy DTH hammers with follow-up casing—a technique that prevents hole collapse and ensures a clean, reliable water well. The rig’s hydraulic cylinder for propulsion and lifting provides smooth, controlled force, reducing wear on drill bits and extending their service life. The large-diameter hydraulic rotary motors deliver consistent torque even at depth, making the SQY350 equally effective for agricultural irrigation wells and municipal water supply projects.
For contractors working in remote areas of Nigeria, the rig’s self-contained design is a significant advantage. A generator, mud pump, and foam pump can be specified to allow immediate operation without waiting on auxiliary equipment, while the Weichai diesel engine offers a balance of power and fuel efficiency.
