SINOVO SD-1000 Full Hydraulic Core Drilling Rig Launched for Mid-Deep Exploration

SINOVO Group has released the SD-1000, a crawler-mounted full hydraulic top-drive core drilling rig built for operations in the 300-to-1,000-meter depth range. The machine has already seen use on projects both in China and overseas.

1. Designed Around Field Realities

Drilling contractors have long dealt with a familiar set of problems as boreholes go deeper: torque drops off, rod changes eat up too much time, and the rig starts to feel less stable. The SD-1000 Core Drilling Rig was put together with these specific issues in mind.

The power head runs a dual-motor setup with a mechanical gear-shift, pushing out 8,940 N·m of torque at the low end. That kind of grunt keeps the bit turning at a consistent speed even through hard rock. The feed system uses a cylinder-chain multiplication design, with a rapid hoist speed of 45 m/min and a rapid feed of 64 m/min. Less time spent on rod handling means more time actually drilling, and that shows up in the daily footage numbers.

2. Field Test in Africa

One of the more telling trials for the SD-1000 took place at a copper-cobalt project in Africa. The site threw a lot at the rig—weathered, fractured ground near the surface, transitioning into hard quarter at depth, all under a tropical highland climate with wide temperature swings and dust everywhere.

The rigs previously on site had trouble with the fractured zones. Stuck pipe was a regular occurrence, hole walls kept caving in, and progress was painfully slow.

When the SD-1000 came in, things changed. The V-shaped mast guide rail kept the power head rigidly connected to the mast, which cut down on vibration and stopped the drill string from whipping around. That made a real difference in the broken ground—fewer cave-ins, less time spent fighting the hole. The operator could dial in rotary speed and feed pressure from the control station without stepping off the rig, which helped when things got tricky down hole. The gripper and breakout wrench also made rod handling faster, and in that kind of heat, any reduction in physical labor is welcome.

After three months of running, average daily footage was up nearly 30% over the previous equipment. The rig was available for work better than 95% of the time. According to the project manager, the SD-1000 handled the conditions better than they had expected, especially the hydraulic system’s seals and cooling under the heat and dust.

3. Technical Specifications and Application Scope

The SD-1000 standard model achieves maximum drilling depths of 1,000 meters with BQ, 600 meters with NQ, 400 meters with HQ, and 200 meters with PQ. This capacity range makes the rig suitable for a wide array of applications, including solid mineral exploration, archaeological drilling, geothermal well construction, and engineering geological site investigations.

The crawler undercarriage provides excellent gradient climbing capability and terrain adaptability, allowing rapid setup and spud-in without the need for a cast concrete foundation. The hydraulically driven mud pump enables sleepless flow rate adjustment in response to real-time return circulation conditions, while the primary and auxiliary winches facilitate convenient drill pipe handling and casing running operations, reducing reliance on auxiliary lifting equipment at the site.

SINOVO Group has stated that it will continue to refine the SD-1000′s performance based on ongoing field feedback, with a focus on deep-hole drilling and complex formation applications, delivering equipment solutions that more closely align with actual working conditions encountered in global exploration operations.
